My story begins in an intro to media writing course in the Spring of 2015. A business major at the time, I enrolled in the class on a whim. I had always enjoyed writing (mostly in my diary) and hoped this would be a fun, creative outlet. My first piece was a feature about a blind student who, despite being unable to sight read music, could belt out an aria with perfect pitch. After turning it in and receiving a D, I was sure I had made a terrible decision and considered dropping the class. Instead, I rewrote the piece, submitted it to the school newspaper, and four months later received an Associate Press award for that same story that almost made me give up.
The next semester, I took the position of online editor at my school’s newspaper, where I fell in love with journalism and storytelling. I would go on to win several more awards, spend a semester interning in New York City, and eventually found myself starting a career in marketing as a content manager. In 2019, I fulfilled my lifelong dream of living in the City when I moved to New York. As someone who believes deeply in the power of storytelling, I found that everyone has a story worth telling when given a voice and an opportunity. And nowhere has that been more true than in the city that never sleeps.
In 2020, when I was furloughed from my job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was given the chance to start telling a different kind of story. I quickly went back to my roots and began work as a freelance journalist. I have spent the last year covering developments in healthcare and scientific learnings about the ongoing crisis. I have written about changes in the job industry and shared advice from experts on how to succeed in this new world. I even had time to tell a bit of my own story this year.
Now, I’d love to help you get started telling yours.
